Newcomer – New to West Coast Swing

You are fairly new to West Coast Swing and are still building your foundation. Perhaps you have taken an introductory course at your local dance studio, attend weekly classes or occasionally join social dances.

You are working on understanding the basics, timing and connection, and want to feel more comfortable and confident on the social dance floor. This level is for dancers who want to strengthen their fundamentals while learning new material in a supportive and welcoming environment.

Novice – Building confidence and expanding your dance

You are familiar with the fundamentals of West Coast Swing and feel increasingly comfortable social dancing. You no longer need to focus on counting every step or remembering every pattern, and you are starting to feel more freedom in your dance.

You may be competing in the Novice division or considering taking your first steps into competitions. You want to develop your technique, learn variations of the basics and expand your repertoire while becoming a more confident and versatile dancer.

This level is for dancers that can compete in the Novice division (0–16 WSDC points), as well as experienced social dancers with a similar skill level.

Intermediate – Developing technique, musicality and individuality

You have a solid understanding of the fundamentals and are ready to explore West Coast Swing on a deeper level. You are comfortable social dancing with different partners and are developing greater awareness of your own movement and technique.

You want to improve your musicality, connection and individual movement, while exploring more complex concepts, variations, footwork and styling. You are learning not just what to dance, but also how and why.

This level is primarily aimed at dancers competing in the Intermediate division, and experienced non-competing social dancers with a similar skill level. If you don’t compete you will need to attend an audition for this level.

Advanced – Refining your skills and pushing your limits

You have a strong understanding of West Coast Swing and are ready to develop more advanced technique, musicality and body awareness. You are comfortable with complex concepts and want to refine your movement, connection and individual expression.

This level is primarily intended for dancers competing in the Advanced division, as well as experienced non-competing dancers with a similar skill level. Non-competitors will need to attend an audition for this level.

All Star – Pushing your creativity

You are an experienced, highly skilled dancer looking to push your technique, musicality and creativity even further. Classes move at a fast pace and may explore highly detailed concepts, complex movement, advanced connection and greater creative freedom.

This level is intended for dancers competing in the All Star division. Non-competitors will need to attend an audition for this level.

Level placement

We want everyone to get the most out of their weekend. If you are unsure about your level, don’t compete, or wish to attend a higher-level class, you will need to attend an audition. Our instructors reserve the right to recommend a different level if they believe it will provide a better learning experience for you.

Workshop guidelines and etiquette at Norway Westie Fest

At Norway Westie Fest, we want everyone to have a fun and rewarding learning experience. Please choose your workshop level honestly and realistically. Levels are linked to your WSDC competition division, or a similar skill level for non-competitors.

If you are unsure about your level, please read the level descriptions carefully or ask for guidance. Auditions will be mandatory for placement in certain levels for dancers who do not compete, have limited competition points, are unsure of their placement or want to try a level up. Correct level placement is not about being “good” or “bad”, it is about creating the best possible learning environment for everyone. You are only allowed to attend your designated workshop level.

If you are struggling to keep up with the majority of the material in a class, it may be a sign that another level is more suitable for you. Our instructors and event team reserve the right to give recommendations regarding level placement, and we kindly ask you to respect their professional judgement.

Please be supportive and respectful towards your fellow dancers, both in class and on the social dance floor:

  • Avoid giving unsolicited corrections or feedback. Leave technical feedback to the instructors unless your partner asks for your help.
  • Be patient with dancers learning at a different pace.
  • Focus on your own learning rather than comparing yourself to others.
  • Help create a welcoming, encouraging and positive atmosphere.

Let’s create an environment where everyone feels comfortable making mistakes, trying new things and growing as dancers.

Thank you for helping us make Norway Westie Fest a positive and inspiring experience for everyone!
